Duolingo Max Review 2026: Is It Worth It?

N Nerissa Updated 13 min read 159,073 views Language Apps
Reviewed against editorial standards

I tested Duolingo Max for two weeks because I wanted to know whether Video Call and Roleplay made Duolingo meaningfully better for conversation practice.

How much does Duolingo Max cost? During my review, the US app offered Max at $168 a year or $29.99 a month. Duolingo doesn’t list Super, Max or Family Plan prices on its website, so the app’s Shop shows your current price. Super starts with a free trial, Max is sold only in the iOS and Android apps, and a Family Plan covers you and up to 5 others.

Prices checked October 17, 2026.

I went in skeptical. I like how Duolingo makes practice easy to come back to, but I wanted longer answers, more flexible dialogue and clearer pronunciation feedback. My test found real strengths and some frustrating limits.

Duolingo Max Overview

Duolingo Max sits above Super Duolingo. It includes Super’s ad-free experience and unlimited energy, plus Video Call and Roleplay where supported.

What changed: Explain My Answer is now free in several major courses, and skill lessons in the Practice tab are free on iOS and Android. In its May 2026 update, Duolingo also said it was starting to expand Video Call to Super subscribers. Check which calls and activities your account offers before paying for Max.

My take: Max makes the most sense if you already enjoy Duolingo and want conversation inside that routine. If your goal is to learn to speak, our pick is Copycat Cafe (we make it): you hear an everyday conversation, say each line aloud with a pronunciation score on every word, then use it with Copy, your AI conversation partner.

What Sets Duolingo Max Apart?

Max’s conversation features are Video Call and Roleplay. Explain My Answer began as a Max feature but is now free in supported courses.

Explain My Answer (Now Free!)

Explain My Answer explains grammar and vocabulary behind correct or incorrect answers. I like having that extra help when a rule is unclear.

When the explanation button appears after an exercise, tap it to see the feedback. The free Practice tab also includes mistake review.

Duolingo’s availability list names Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Italian, and Korean for most learners. Check your course for the explanation button.

Video Call

Video Call lets you talk back and forth with Lily, an AI-powered Duolingo character.

In my test, I could review the conversation afterward and replay Lily’s messages.

Platform availability: Lily calls are available on iOS and Android in supported courses. Duolingo’s product update confirms Japanese and Korean on Android alongside English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese. Falstaff’s guided calls are documented for iOS Max learners in nine languages, including Chinese, with access still expanding across levels.

Roleplay

Roleplay gives you everyday scenarios, such as ordering at a café, to practise with Duolingo’s characters.

In my test, I could type or speak my responses, read the character’s messages, and use translations.

What Languages Are Available?

Duolingo’s current Max overview lists these courses for English speakers:

  • French
  • Spanish
  • German
  • Italian
  • Portuguese
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Chinese

Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese are listed for both Video Call and Roleplay. Japanese, Korean, and Chinese are listed for Video Call.

If you learn through Spanish or another interface language, check the Max features offered in your own course. Duolingo’s full course catalog is broader than its Max feature list.

Pricing

During my review, the US app offered Max at $168 a year or $29.99 a month. Duolingo doesn’t list Super, Max or Family Plan prices on its website or in its help center; the app’s Shop shows your current price. Its help center also says it sometimes runs small tests on its subscriptions, so the options you see may differ from someone else’s.

What Duolingo does publish:

  • Super: you can subscribe in the app or on the web. The Super page offers 1 week free, and the US App Store listing advertises 14 days free.
  • Max: sold only in the iOS and Android apps, as an individual plan or a Family Plan. Super subscribers can upgrade from the app’s Shop.
  • Family Plan: one subscription shared by you and up to 5 others, for Super or Max.

Before you subscribe, check the price, billing period and trial shown on your screen.

The Good Stuff

  • Reinforced learning: In my test, revisiting roleplays reminded me of useful points from earlier scenarios.

  • English fallback: In my roleplay tests, I could reply in English and see the response translated into French.

  • Simple navigation: I found it easy to switch between lessons, roleplays, and other features.

  • Stable performance in my test: I did not run into glitches during my two-week test.

  • Mobile availability: Max is available on iOS and Android, although newer features and courses can arrive on iOS first.

What’s Not So Good

Limited Conversation Depth in My Test

During my two-week test, conversations with Lily often ended after just two or three exchanges, whether I stayed on topic or not. When I asked something off-topic to test the AI’s flexibility, Lily gave a generic answer and redirected me back to the scenario.

Duolingo has since added longer calls for advanced learners, post-call feedback, beginner captions, and Push-To-Talk. Lily can also remember previous conversations, while Falstaff asks questions and coaches you. Those changes address some of the limits I encountered.

Minimal Response Depth

Lily’s replies in my Roleplays and Video Calls were usually short. One example I tried in French was: “J’ai étudié dur, mais j’échoue toujours à mes examens. Que dois-je faire?” I received a brief, generic answer, while other conversation apps gave me more detailed suggestions and follow-up questions.

Pronunciation Feedback Fell Short for Me

This was my biggest disappointment: I wanted more detailed pronunciation feedback from the version I tested. The current official Max descriptions focus on conversation feedback and transcripts; they do not list a word-by-word pronunciation score.

For French, I personally want specific feedback because the relationship between spelling and sound can be difficult. Copycat Cafe gives a 0–100 pronunciation score on every word, with feedback for your next attempt. ELSA Speak is another pronunciation-focused option if you are learning English.

Limited Character Variety

When I tested Max, Lily was the only character I could call. Falstaff has since added a guided format on iOS. I still think a wider mix of voices, speeds, and personalities would make the practice feel closer to talking with different people, but it is no longer a one-character experience.

Check Your Device Before Subscribing

Duolingo’s help center says Max can’t be bought on the web and its features are only in the iOS and Android apps. If you mostly learn on a computer, Max won’t add anything there.

The Verdict: Is Duolingo Max Worth It?

After 2 weeks of testing, here’s my honest recommendation based on your learning goals:

✅ Duolingo Max IS Worth It If You:

  • Already love Duolingo and want a little extra speaking practice
  • Are intermediate level (A2-B1) and bored with standard lessons
  • Value gamification over intensive conversation practice
  • Want variety in your existing Duolingo routine

My verdict: Max felt like a meaningful conversation upgrade to Duolingo in my test, but still felt like Duolingo first and a dedicated speaking app second.

❌ Duolingo Max ISN’T Worth It If You:

  • Need detailed pronunciation feedback beyond what the available Max activities give you
  • Want longer AI conversations than the calls available in your course
  • Are advanced and find the available conversations too guided for your goals
  • Prioritize speaking practice over gamified lessons

For focused speaking practice: Consider Copycat Cafe or an AI conversation app such as Langua. Compare the actual practice you get with the Max offer on your account.

Better Alternatives for Focused Speaking Practice

Max and Copycat Cafe solve different problems. Max adds conversation to Duolingo’s gamified path. Copycat Cafe starts with practical dialogue and makes listening, copying aloud, pronunciation feedback, and conversation the whole method.

Copycat Cafe costs $174 a year ($14.50 a month) or $29 a month, with a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee on your first payment. It includes up to 1,000 messages a day and 30 minutes of voice calls a day with Copy.

My recommendation: Choose Max if you love Duolingo’s style and want its conversation features in the same routine. Choose Copycat Cafe if you want to learn to speak: you copy everyday conversations aloud with a pronunciation score, then use them with Copy. If budget comes first, keep free Duolingo and add a separate conversation tool.
