How the lesson works
-
1
Hear the scene
Sam and Jonas are roommates making breakfast with oat milk and one slice of bread. First, you just listen for how many slices there are.
-
2
Understand the useful phrases
Jonas explains each phrase in English, only as much as helps your next try.
-
3
Copy them out loud
Say each phrase in the pause after you hear it. Copy the sound and rhythm before worrying about grammar.
-
4
Try your answers
Swap coffee for tea and bread for milk from memory, then play the hungry roommate twice. A spoken answer follows every pause, so you can compare.
Missed an answer? Keep listening. The words come back, and you don’t need to touch the screen once the episode is playing.
After this episode
You can ask whether someone has something, say what you have, ask whether there's bread too, and say you're very hungry.
Level A1. Written for adult English speakers starting German. You don’t need any German to begin.
Phrases you’ll say
-
Hast du Kaffee?
Do you have coffee?

-
Dann bekommst du die größere Hälfte.
Then you get the bigger half.
-
Eine Scheibe hat keine größere Hälfte.
One slice doesn't have a bigger half.
-
Heute schon. Ich schneide sehr kreativ.
It does today. I cut very creatively.
Listening with your screen off
The download is the most reliable way. Save the MP3 and play it offline in any audio app. Your browser puts it with your other downloads (on iPhone, in the Files app).
Playing from this page can keep going when you lock your phone, depending on your phone and browser. Some pause when you switch apps or close the tab. If yours does, use the download.
The speaking pauses are optional. If you’re driving, keep your attention on the road: just listen, or skip the speaking parts. The episode says the same.
Transcript
Every word of Episode 4. Choose a time to play from there. “Your turn” marks a pause for you to speak; German is in bold.
Welcome
Sam: Breakfast at home. Two hungry roommates, one kitchen, and not much food.
Jonas: And a lot of negotiating. Welcome back to Copycat Cafe. I'm Jonas.
Sam: And I'm Sam.
Jonas: Sam and I are AI-generated voices. Today you'll learn to ask if someone has something, say what you have, ask what's in the kitchen, and say you're very hungry. Listen first. Copy the sound. Then try the words for yourself. We'll leave space for you to speak.
Jonas: If you miss an answer, let it go. You'll hear the words again. You don't need to rewind or look at a screen. If you're driving, keep your attention on the road and skip the speaking exercises.
In the kitchen
Jonas: Here's the whole scene. Sam and I are roommates, in our kitchen, first thing in the morning. Roommates say du to each other. Listen for one thing: how many slices of bread are there? A slice is eine Scheibe.
Sam: Hast du Kaffee?
Jonas: Ja, aber wir haben keine Milch.
Sam: Ich habe Hafermilch im Kühlschrank.
Jonas: Super. Haben wir auch Brot?
Sam: Eine Scheibe. Und ich habe großen Hunger.
Jonas: Dann bekommst du die größere Hälfte.
Sam: Eine Scheibe hat keine größere Hälfte.
Jonas: Heute schon. Ich schneide sehr kreativ.
Jonas: So, how many slices of bread? Say it in English.
Your turn · 3-second pause
Jonas: One. Eine Scheibe. One slice, and two hungry roommates.
Sam: I can already see the problem.
Do you have coffee?
Jonas: Sam starts with: hast du Kaffee? Do you have coffee? Hast du, do you have. Kaffee, coffee, the word from our very first episode. Copy it: hast du Kaffee?
Your turn · 4-second pause
Jonas: I answer: ja, aber wir haben keine Milch. Yes, but we don't have any milk. Aber, but. Wir haben, we have. Keine Milch, no milk. You met keine with the pretzel: keine echte Brezel. There's no ordinary milk, but Sam has a backup. You only need to recognise this line.
Jonas: Sam says: ich habe Hafermilch im Kühlschrank. I have oat milk in the fridge. Ich habe, I have. Hafermilch, oat milk. Copy the start: ich habe Hafermilch.
Your turn · 4.5-second pause
Jonas: Im Kühlschrank, in the fridge. Now the whole line: ich habe Hafermilch im Kühlschrank.
Your turn · 5.5-second pause
Bread and hunger
Jonas: I say: super. Haben wir auch Brot? Great. Do we have bread too? Haben wir, do we have. Auch, too, like er heißt auch Leo. Brot, bread, the thing the customer wanted at the bakery. Copy it: haben wir auch Brot?
Your turn · 4.5-second pause
Jonas: Sam answers: eine Scheibe. One slice. Copy it: eine Scheibe.
Your turn · 4-second pause
Jonas: And then: und ich habe großen Hunger. And I'm very hungry. In German, you have hunger. Ich habe Hunger, I'm hungry. Großen Hunger, big hunger, so very hungry. Copy it: ich habe großen Hunger.
Your turn · 5-second pause
Jonas: Once more: ich habe großen Hunger.
Your turn · 5-second pause
The bigger half
Jonas: I'm generous: dann bekommst du die größere Hälfte. Then you get the bigger half. Careful here. Bekommen means to get, not to become. Du bekommst, you get. Here's a quick check. Dann bekommst du die größere Hälfte. Who gets the bigger half: Sam, or me? Say it in English.
Your turn · 3.5-second pause
Jonas: Sam. Du bekommst, you get. And Sam points out the problem: eine Scheibe hat keine größere Hälfte. One slice doesn't have a bigger half. I answer: heute schon. Ich schneide sehr kreativ. It does today. I cut very creatively. You only need to recognise these lines.
Sam: Very creatively. That's what worries me.
Jonas: Notice one verb in four forms. Ich habe, I have. Du hast, you have. Wir haben, we have. And the slice: eine Scheibe hat, a slice has. Keep each one together with the word in front: ich habe, du hast, wir haben, eine Scheibe hat.
Ask about other things
Sam: And if I want tea, not coffee?
Jonas: Then swap one word. Hast du Tee? Do you have tea? Copy it: hast du Tee?
Your turn · 4-second pause
Jonas: Now without hearing the German first. Ask your roommate: do you have coffee?
Your turn · 5-second pause
Jonas: Hast du Kaffee? Now ask: do we have bread too?
Your turn · 5-second pause
Jonas: Haben wir auch Brot? Now ask: do we have milk too? Milk is Milch.
Your turn · 5-second pause
Jonas: Haben wir auch Milch? Now say: I have tea.
Your turn · 4.5-second pause
Jonas: Ich habe Tee.
Sam: So, tea, oat milk and one slice of bread. A feast.
Breakfast for two
Jonas: Let's put it together. You take Sam's part, the hungry roommate. I'll be me. Start by asking me: do you have coffee?
Your turn · 5-second pause
Jonas: Ja, aber wir haben keine Milch.
Jonas: Say: I have oat milk in the fridge.
Your turn · 6.5-second pause
Jonas: Super. Haben wir auch Brot?
Jonas: Say: one slice. And I'm very hungry.
Your turn · 7-second pause
Jonas: Dann bekommst du die größere Hälfte.
Jonas: Here's one version of your part. Hast du Kaffee? Ich habe Hafermilch im Kühlschrank. Eine Scheibe. Und ich habe großen Hunger. If you missed a step, that's fine. These gaps are for practice, not a test.
Listen again
Jonas: Let's hear the original scene again. No explanations this time. Notice which bits you recognise.
Sam: Hast du Kaffee?
Jonas: Ja, aber wir haben keine Milch.
Sam: Ich habe Hafermilch im Kühlschrank.
Jonas: Super. Haben wir auch Brot?
Sam: Eine Scheibe. Und ich habe großen Hunger.
Jonas: Dann bekommst du die größere Hälfte.
Sam: Eine Scheibe hat keine größere Hälfte.
Jonas: Heute schon. Ich schneide sehr kreativ.
Your turn
Jonas: Now a different morning. Sam will stay quiet. You'd like tea today. Start by asking me: do you have tea?
Your turn · 5-second pause
Jonas: Ja. Und ich habe Hafermilch.
Jonas: Yes, and I have oat milk. Say: great. Do we have bread too?
Your turn · 6-second pause
Jonas: Eine Scheibe.
Jonas: One slice, again. Say: I'm very hungry.
Your turn · 5-second pause
Jonas: Ich auch.
Jonas: Me too. Here's one version of your part. Hast du Tee? Super. Haben wir auch Brot? Ich habe großen Hunger.
Sam: Two very hungry people, and one slice of bread. Good luck with that.
Keep the phrases
Jonas: One last line from memory. Say: I'm very hungry.
Your turn · 5-second pause
Jonas: Ich habe großen Hunger. Keep that line, and hast du, for asking if someone has something. You heard them, copied them, and swapped coffee for tea and bread for milk. You don't need every word from the scene today. Come back and try the gaps again. Next in the course, we take that hunger to the market. This is the free Copycat Cafe audio course. The optional paid app adds pronunciation feedback and conversations that respond to you. Today's matching lesson is Roommate breakfast. Tschüss!
Sam: Bye. I'm keeping an eye on that bread knife.
