How the lesson works
-
1
Hear the scene
Sophie meets Martin, a friend of a friend, for the first time. First, you just listen for one thing: is Martin hungry?
-
2
Understand the useful phrases
Camille explains each phrase in English, only as much as helps your next try.
-
3
Copy them out loud
Say each phrase in the pause after you hear it. Copy the sound and rhythm before worrying about grammar.
-
4
Try your answers
Answer from memory, swap in your own name and a café, then play Martin, and then meet Camille yourself. A spoken answer follows every pause, so you can compare.
Missed an answer? Keep listening. The words come back, and you don’t need to touch the screen once the episode is playing.
After this episode
You can check that someone is the person you're meeting, say hi and your name, say nice to meet you, say you're hungry and ask about them, and agree to go and eat.

Listening with your screen off
The download is the most reliable way. Save the MP3 and play it offline in any audio app. Your browser puts it with your other downloads (on iPhone, in the Files app).
Playing from this page can keep going when you lock your phone, depending on your phone and browser. Some pause when you switch apps or close the tab. If yours does, use the download.
The speaking pauses are optional. If you’re driving, keep your attention on the road: just listen, or skip the speaking parts. The episode says the same.
Transcript
Every word of Episode 2. Choose a time to play from there. “Your turn” marks a pause for you to speak; French is in bold.
Welcome
Sam: I'm meeting a friend of a friend. His name is Martin. I've seen exactly one photo of him, and he was wearing sunglasses.
Camille: So anyone at the station could be Martin. Welcome to Copycat Cafe. I'm Camille.
Sam: And I'm Sam. I'm checking every face.
Camille: One more thing before we start: Sam and I are AI-generated voices. This is episode two of the free French course. You'll meet someone for the first time: check it's really them, say hi and your name, say nice to meet you, and agree that you're both hungry. Listen first. Copy the sound. Then try the words for yourself.
Camille: If you miss an answer, let it go. You'll hear the words again. If you're driving, keep your attention on the road and skip the speaking exercises.
Meeting Martin
Camille: Here's the whole scene. Sam is Sophie. I'm Martin. They've never met. Listen for one thing: is Martin hungry?
Sam: Martin ?
Camille: Oui, c'est moi.
Sam: Salut ! Je suis Sophie.
Camille: Enchanté !
Sam: Tu as faim ?
Camille: Oui, j'ai très faim. Et toi ?
Sam: Moi aussi, j'ai faim. Il y a un restaurant là-bas, si tu veux.
Camille: D'accord, allons-y !
Is it you?
Sam: So Martin is hungry. Very hungry.
Camille: He is. Let's start at the beginning. Sophie isn't sure it's him, so she just says his name as a question: Martin ? And he answers: oui, c'est moi. Yes, it's me. Copy it: oui, c'est moi.
Your turn · 4-second pause
Camille: Oui, c'est moi. Once more. Let it run together.
Your turn · 4-second pause
Say hi and your name
Camille: Then Sophie introduces herself. Salut ! Je suis Sophie. Hi! I'm Sophie. Salut is a friendly hi, for a relaxed meeting like this one. Je suis means I am. Copy Sophie's line: salut ! Je suis Sophie.
Your turn · 5-second pause
Camille: Now use your own name. Say hi, and say who you are.
Your turn · 5-second pause
Sam: Salut ! Je suis Sam.
Camille: Same shape, any name.
Nice to meet you
Camille: Martin replies: enchanté ! Nice to meet you. Literally, delighted. When a woman says it, the spelling changes slightly, but the sound is exactly the same. So everyone can copy this: enchanté !
Your turn · 4-second pause
Camille: Enchanté ! Once more, as if you're pleased to meet them.
Your turn · 3.5-second pause
Are you hungry?
Sam: And then, straight to food. I like Sophie.
Camille: She has priorities. Tu as faim ? Are you hungry? French doesn't say you are hungry. It says you have hunger. Tu as faim. Copy the question: tu as faim ?
Your turn · 4.5-second pause
Camille: Martin's answer starts with j'ai. I have. J'ai faim. I'm hungry. Copy it: j'ai faim.
Your turn · 4-second pause
Camille: He's very hungry, so he adds très. Very. Oui, j'ai très faim. Copy it.
Your turn · 5-second pause
Camille: Then he turns the question around: et toi ? And you? Toi, like tu, is the informal you, for one person. Sophie and Martin use it because this is a relaxed, friendly meeting. In a shop, you'd usually hear the polite vous instead. Copy it: et toi ?
Your turn · 3.5-second pause
Camille: Sophie answers: moi aussi, j'ai faim. Me too, I'm hungry. Copy the whole answer: moi aussi, j'ai faim.
Your turn · 5-second pause
From memory
Camille: Now try it without hearing the French first. Ask a friend if they're hungry.
Your turn · 5-second pause
Camille: Tu as faim ? Now answer that question: yes, I'm very hungry. Then ask: and you?
Your turn · 7-second pause
Camille: Oui, j'ai très faim. Et toi ? Now say: me too, I'm hungry.
Your turn · 5-second pause
Camille: Moi aussi, j'ai faim. Me too, I'm hungry.
There's a restaurant over there
Camille: Sophie has a plan. Il y a un restaurant là-bas, si tu veux. There's a restaurant over there, if you want. Il y a means there is. And if you heard episode one, you know là-bas. Over there.
Sam: Another restaurant. This course is very good for my lunch plans.
Camille: Copy the first part: il y a un restaurant là-bas.
Your turn · 5.5-second pause
Camille: Now change one word. Un café is a café. Say: there's a café over there.
Your turn · 6-second pause
Camille: Il y a un café là-bas. Same beginning, a different place.
Let's go
Camille: And Martin agrees: d'accord, allons-y ! Okay, let's go! You may know d'accord already. Allons-y means let's go. The sounds run together: allons-y. Copy it.
Your turn · 4-second pause
Camille: D'accord, allons-y ! The whole reply.
Your turn · 4.5-second pause
Listen again
Camille: Let's hear the original scene again. No explanations this time. Notice which bits you recognise.
Sam: Martin ?
Camille: Oui, c'est moi.
Sam: Salut ! Je suis Sophie.
Camille: Enchanté !
Sam: Tu as faim ?
Camille: Oui, j'ai très faim. Et toi ?
Sam: Moi aussi, j'ai faim. Il y a un restaurant là-bas, si tu veux.
Camille: D'accord, allons-y !
Your turn: be Martin
Camille: Now you're Martin. Sam is Sophie again. After each of her lines, I'll give you a short hint, then it's your turn.
Sam: Martin ?
Camille: Answer: yes, it's me.
Your turn · 4-second pause
Sam: Salut ! Je suis Sophie.
Camille: Say nice to meet you.
Your turn · 3.5-second pause
Sam: Tu as faim ?
Camille: Say yes, you're very hungry. Then ask: and you?
Your turn · 6.5-second pause
Sam: Moi aussi, j'ai faim. Il y a un restaurant là-bas, si tu veux.
Camille: Agree, and say let's go.
Your turn · 4.5-second pause
Camille: Here's one version of Martin's part: oui, c'est moi. Enchanté ! Oui, j'ai très faim. Et toi ? D'accord, allons-y ! If you missed a line, that's fine. These gaps are for practice, not a test.
Your turn: meet me
Camille: Now switch sides. Sam will stay quiet. You're meeting me for the first time, and you know my name is Camille. Check it's me: say my name as a question.
Your turn · 3.5-second pause
Camille: Oui, c'est moi. Now say hi, and tell me your name.
Your turn · 5-second pause
Camille: Enchanté ! Now ask me if I'm hungry.
Your turn · 4-second pause
Camille: Oui, j'ai très faim. Et toi ? Say you're hungry too. Then tell me there's a café over there.
Your turn · 9-second pause
Camille: D'accord, allons-y ! Here's one version of your part: Camille ? Salut ! Je suis Sam, or your own name. Tu as faim ? Moi aussi, j'ai faim. Il y a un café là-bas.
Sam: Two conversations, and we're finally going to eat.
Keep the phrases
Camille: One last one from memory. Someone checks it's you. Say: yes, it's me. Then say hi, and give your name.
Your turn · 6.5-second pause
Camille: Oui, c'est moi. Salut ! Je suis Sam, or your own name. Keep salut, je suis, enchanté, and j'ai faim. You've heard them, had space to copy them, and practised changing a name and a place. You don't need every word from the scene today. Come back and try the gaps again. This is the free Copycat Cafe audio course. The optional paid app adds pronunciation feedback and conversations that respond to you. Today's matching lesson is Nice to meet you! In the next episode, we're ordering breakfast at a bakery. For now, bonne journée !
Sam: Bonne journée ! Now, about that restaurant.
