What's New in Copycat Cafe (March 2026)

Every month, I want to share what’s new in Copycat Cafe — what got better and what’s coming next. This is the first one.

March was a big month. Here’s what changed.

Flashcards that grade you

Copycat Cafe’s flashcards used to work like every other flashcard app: see the answer, rate yourself. Now you actually have to produce the answer — type it or say it out loud — and an AI checks whether you got it right.

The grading is smart about it. It checks meaning, not exact wording. “Je voudrais un café” and “je veux un café” both count. So does “j’aimerais un café.” If you got the meaning across, that’s what matters.

What else is new in flashcards:

• Hear your recording. After answering by voice, tap the speaker icon next to your answer to hear what you sounded like. Compare it side-by-side with the correct pronunciation.
• Conversation context. Each card shows the line before yours from the original dialogue. You’re continuing a conversation, not translating in a vacuum.
• Daily goal. Pick how many cards you want per day. Default is 10. Fifteen minutes, not two hours.

Better conversations with your AI partner

The AI conversation partner got a personality upgrade. It used to fire a question at you every single turn — which felt more like a police interrogation than a café chat. Now it responds the way a real person would. Sometimes it asks a follow-up. Sometimes it just reacts. Sometimes it shares something about itself.

Conversations also end properly now. When you say goodbye, Copy says goodbye back instead of desperately trying to keep the conversation going.

If you haven’t tried the chat yet, this is what makes Copycat Cafe different from other language apps: you actually speak. Not multiple choice. Not matching exercises. A real conversation where you have to find the words yourself — and an AI that gently corrects you when you get it wrong.

Improved speech recognition

The app is better at understanding your French and Spanish, especially if you’re still working on your accent. We upgraded the speech recognition engine, and the difference is noticeable — fewer misheard words, faster response, and it no longer gets confused between your target language and English.

Also new: - Slow speed in Copy practice. Hear phrases at a slower speed before trying them yourself. Helpful for longer sentences where you need to catch every word. - Play back your recording. Record yourself, listen back, compare with the native speaker. This has been the most requested feature since launch.

You might notice a language switcher next to the logo. It now shows French (active) and Spanish (active).

Back in March, we wrote that the app already worked in Spanish — conversations, pronunciation scoring, speech recognition, the full Copycat Method. What was left was writing and recording 200 Spanish lessons.

Update (April 2026): Spanish has officially launched. All 200 lessons are live. The Copycat Method — watch, copy, chat — is now available for both French and Spanish. When you subscribe, you get access to both languages. No extra cost. Same method, new language.

Faster, everywhere

We rebuilt how the app handles traffic behind the scenes. The result: everything loads faster, and the app stays snappy even when lots of people are practicing at the same time. You probably won’t notice the change — and that’s exactly the point.

What’s next

April is about getting Spanish across the finish line and acting on your feedback. Some of our most dedicated users have sent detailed notes about things that could be better, and they’re right. We’re working through the list.
